VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- Longtime Virginia Del. Harry R. Purkey won't seek re-election in November.
The Republican who represents the 82nd District that includes part of Virginia Beach announced his intentions on Saturday.
Purkey says the decision not to seek re-election comes after "much soul-searching and great reflection."
He said he's worked to strengthen Virginia's economy by promoting the ports and fighting higher taxes, and that he's proud of the nearly 200 pieces of legislation he's had signed into law.
Purkey was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1986 and currently serves as chairman of the House Finance Committee.
In a statement on Saturday, House Speaker Bill Howell commended Purkey for his work over the past two decades.
Purkey is among the nine delegates and one senator leaving the General Assembly.
