Bungled response revealed in Md. double fatal fire

Thursday - 4/4/2013, 1:24pm  ET

FREDERICK, Md. - Frederick County fire and rescue officials say it took Myersville volunteer firefighters more than an hour to reach a house fire three miles away in which two children died.

The Frederick News-Post ( ) reported Thursday on blunders revealed by the county's analysis of the Jan. 31 incident.

The report says a Myersville Volunteer Fire Company pumper engine took a wrong turn and got stuck while trying to turn around.

Fire and Rescue Division Director Tom Owens says a faster response would not have saved 3-year-old Madigan Lillard and her 6-year-old sister Sophie. He says an engine from another volunteer company arrived sooner but the fire spread too quickly to save the children.

County officials say they're trying to determine why the Myersville crew went the wrong way.
