NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A Mathews County man has been sentenced to three years, 10 months in federal prison for tax fraud.
After a six-day trial in November, a federal jury in Newport News convicted Jeffrey Charles of conspiracy, filing a false tax return and three counts of assisting in the preparation of false tax returns. He was sentenced Monday.
Charles, a registered nurse and the administrator of a rehabilitation center, was convicted of conspiring with his daughter and son-in-law to impede the IRS in calculating and collecting federal income taxes. He also helped prepare three false tax returns for his daughter, and filed one in his own name.
Along with the prison term, Charles was ordered to pay more than $300,000 in restitution to the IRS.
