ALEXANDRIA – A tall glass of frosty, frothy suds.

Raise one of those at Port City Brewing on Saturday and you’ll be lending a helping hand to Peter Laboy, the Alexandria motorcycle officer who was shot in the head last month during a traffic stop in Old Town.

A fund has been set up to help Laboy and his family, and Port City Brewing will donate 10 percent of Saturday’s total sales from its tasting room to that fund.

“We feel close to Officer Laboy,” says Bill Butcher, the brewery’s owner. “He helped us out when we were building our brewery. When our first piece of equipment was arriving, he and all the other Alexandria motorcycle officers gave us a police escort when they brought the tank in off the highway.”

Butcher also points out that Alexandria police headquarters are right up the street from Port City Brewing.

In her blog this week, Laboy’s wife, Suzanne, said he is improving “every moment of the day.”

Donations for the Officer Peter Laboy fund should be dropped off at the Alexandria Police Department, 3600 Wheeler Avenue, Alexandria, Va. 22304.

Donations can also be sent through the mail:

The Alexandria Police Association c/o Peter Laboy P.O. Box 1228 Alexandria, Va. 22313
