Dr. Katy Nelson, special to wtop.com
WASHINGTON - Four-legged friends were among the guests at the Washington Humane Society's 12th annual Sugar and Champagne Affair at the Ronald Reagan Building in D.C. last night.
The sold-out event hosted by chefs Todd and Ellen Gray of Equinox Restaurant and Muse at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in D.C. honored local crusaders against animal cruelty: Washington Humane Society's humane law enforcement officers, animal care and control officers and WHS humane educators.
WHS also honored some local Humane Heroes who have had a positive impact on the lives of animals in D.C. over the past year. Recipients included Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, D.C. police officers Arthur Douglas, Jr. and John Carruthers, and WUSA9 reporter Matt Jablow, among others.
94.7 Fresh FM's "The Tommy Show" host Tommy McFLY emcee'd the event and excited the crowd during the first-ever "Cake Walk" that auctioned off five spectacular cakes supplied by local bakers, including a vegan confection from Doron Petersan of Sticky Fingers Bakery, two-time winner of Food Network's "Cupcake Wars."
The ever-so-fashionable guests sampled sweets, sips and savories from more than 80 restaurants, mixologists and wineries. Their pups sampled doggie beers, treats and other goodies from Barkley Square's "Bark Bar" and could pick up cleaning supplies for any unexpected little accidents at the WHS hydrant booths.
The funds raised from this super sweet event go toward helping the more than 30,000 animals whose lives are changed by the Washington Humane Society every year, as well as supporting their many community outreach programs.
