WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) - The Greenbrier and eight unions representing more than 1,000 workers have agreed to a five-year contract.

The vote Friday was 549-37 in favor of ratification. The resort and union leaders signed the agreement after the vote.

"I don't know if it's the highest percentage in favor of a contract in the history of our unions, but I know it's the highest during my tenure here," Peter Bostic, business manager for Workers United Local 863, told the Register-Herald ( of Beckley.

The new contract goes into effect immediately. The old contract was to end Thursday.

Owner Jim Justice said the agreement is an important milestone for the sprawling, high-end resort.

"It speaks volumes for the resort's longevity and the strong partnership we have established with our more than 1,200 hard-working employees at The Greenbrier," Justice said in a statement.

Justice bought The Greenbrier out of bankruptcy in 2009 for $20.1 million. He also rescued the Wintergreen Resort in Virginia's Nelson County.
