2 people die in separate morning crashes

WASHINGTON – The first day back to work after a long holiday weekend brought with it problems on four major commuter routes Tuesday morning and two fatalities.

In Maryland, one driver died after a single-car crash on southbound Interstate 270.

The 5:15 a.m. crash initially closed the main lanes of I-270 after the Shady Grove exit.

The highway did not fully reopen until 7:44 a.m.

Maryland State Police are continuing to investigate.

Meanwhile, Virginia State Police are investigating the cause of a crash that killed the driver of a minivan on southbound Interstate 95 at the Fairfax County Parkway.

The driver who died in the 6:44 a.m. crash ran into the rear of a three-axle truck, police say.

While southbound I-95 did not close completely, lanes did close. They completely reopened three hours later.

The other incidents involved brush fires near Interstate 66 and the closure of the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway.

Just before 6 a.m., firefighters battled brush fires in Arlington County that caused traffic problems on westbound Interstate 66.

The fires occurred on a hilly area between I-66 and Washington Boulevard. Their smoke caused some traffic delays westbound on I-66, near Falls Church and shut down at least one lane. All lanes have reopened.

And, a crash on the main lanes of the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway forced the Inner Loop to shut down just past Interstate 395, near the entrance for the Express Lanes. All lanes reopened at 6:50 a.m.
