Metro: Red Line back to normal

Wednesday - 1/16/2013, 9:03am  ET

WASHINGTON - Metro says it has finished some emergency maintenance that caused major delays on the busy Red Line during the morning rush hour.

Metro announced shortly after 8:30 a.m. that it had restored normal operations on the red line through the heart of downtown Washington.

Trains had been forced to share a single track in both directions between Farragut North and Judiciary Square for more than two hours. The resulting delays left platforms crowded with commuters who were unable to squeeze onto trains.

Metro said the single-tracking was necessary to repair a piece of rail at a switch point.

Delays were expected to continue until after 9 a.m.
