CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. - Eight U.S. Coast Guard members stationed in Chincoteague are being punished for using drugs.
The Coast Guard said Monday that the personnel are being processed for a discharge as a result of the administrative proceedings. The members' punishment also includes restriction, forfeiture of pay and reduction in pay grade.
The members are connected with the Coast Guard's Sector Field Office, Aids to Navigation Team and Electronic Support Detachment on the barrier island.
The ranks of those involved ranged from a seaman apprentice to a petty officer first class. The Coast Guard did not identify those who admitted using a prohibited substance or specify what that substance is.
A tip from outside the Coast Guard in November prompted the investigation.
