Portsmouth council meeting edits challenged

Wednesday - 1/23/2013, 10:32am  ET

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - A Portsmouth citizen group claims the City Council is illegally cutting non-agenda speakers from broadcasts of its meetings.

The broadcasts are shown on the city's website and Portsmouth Channel TV.

Media outlets report that the Portsmouth Taxpayer Alliance filed a complaint against the council with the commonwealth's attorney requesting an investigation.

Alliance members say council members decided behind closed doors to cut from meeting broadcasts speakers who address topics that aren't on the agenda.

Commonwealth's Attorney spokesman Bill Price says the office doesn't plan an investigation. He says prosecutors believe the council can resolve the issue.

Councilman Bill Moody says he doesn't believe any rules were violated. But he thinks the non-agenda speakers' comments should be broadcast.
