Regs allow Va. wheelchair user to resume bus rides

Sunday - 1/6/2013, 4:39pm  ET

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - George Lewis and his wheelchair are riding FREDericksburg Regional Transit buses again, thanks to a change in federal regulations.

Transit officials told Lewis in the summer of 2011 that he couldn't ride anymore because he and his motorized wheelchair were too heavy.

Since then, the Americans with Disabilities Act regulations have changed. Passengers in wheelchairs of any size must be transported, as long as the combined weight doesn't exceed 800 pounds and the bus lifts can handle them.

Lewis told transit officials about the revised regulations last month. They agreed that he could ride and sent him 17 fare cards.

Lewis tells The Free Lance-Star ( http://bit.ly/RAlp0C) that he knew there had to be a way and he wasn't going to give up.
