WASHINGTON - Kick off 2013 with a weekend full of fun and adventure. Catch a light show, see Shrek on ice and hear local storytellers spin their webs.
Head to Centreville, Va. Friday through Sunday for the Bull Run Festival of Lights, which will feature more than 40,000 animated lights set to music. And the best part: Explore the winter wonderland from the comfort of your car! The light show starts at 5:30 p.m., but make sure to arrive early and beat the crowds. Tickets are $20 per car. Sneak in one more holiday-themed evening at National Harbor with ICE! featuring DreamWorks' Shrek the Halls. Watch as Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots and others come to life through colorful ice sculptures and 20-foot ice slides carved from two million pounds of frozen goodness. While many people in the region will be holed up watching the Redskins take on the Seattle Seahawks Sunday, here are some alternatives for the non-football crowd:
"I'm just a bill, yes I'm only a bill..." If you or your kids love Schoolhouse Rock, don't miss the 40th Anniversary Schoolhouse Rock Sing-a-long at the Kennedy Center at 6 p.m. Sunday featuring the TV series' songwriter and former musical director Bob Dorough and children's band Rocknoceros. The performance is free.
"The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band kicks off its 2013 Living History concert series with a celebration of John Philip Sousa. The Sousa Season Opener takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Center for the Arts Concert Hall at George Mason University. Admission is free.
Northwest D.C.'s 9:30 Club will host Top Shelf, a one night performance featuring the best storytellers from local non-profit SpeakeasyDC. The evening will feature eight stories, each selected from nearly 150 that have been performed over the past 12 months.
