Holiday hangover: Tips for easing back into work

Neal Augenstein, wtop.com

WASHINGTON – It was fun while it lasted, but it’s back to reality.

Many of you are returning to work Wednesday after a long Christmas and New Year’s vacation.

Luckily, the hardest part is behind you — setting the alarm clock and getting out of bed — in many cases hours earlier than you did during your time off.

Experts suggest easing back into your work routine.

If possible, get to work an hour early, so you can start the catch-up process before everyone else arrives at the office.

Scan your physical mailbox, email inbox and calendar. Get a rough idea of what old business you still have to complete, as well as the new to-do list that arrived on your desk after you left for vacation.

If possible, delay taking on new responsibilities while your sorting and clearing items already on your plate.

Relax. Avoid feeling the need to be completely caught up before your second of cup of coffee.

Resume other parts of your “normal life,” such as going to the gym and meeting friends for coffee.

If you’re feeling a bit bummed that your exciting or peaceful vacation is over, you can start planning the next one.
