Potomac riverkeeper Ed Merrifield retiring

WASHINGTON - The man who protects the Potomac River from pollution is retiring from his job as the waterway's riverkeeper.

The Washington Post ( http://wapo.st/S1opok) reports Ed Merrifield's retirement is effective New Year's Eve. The 65-year-old Rockville resident has been the Potomac riverkeeper since 2003. A former chiropractor and federal government computer programmer he says he was deeply influenced by a book called "The Riverkeepers" which chronicles the start of the riverkeeper movement.

Merrifield will be replaced by Matthew Logan, former president of both the C &O Canal Trust and Potomac Conservancy.
