ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A Roanoke man who led authorities on a chase that ended when he rammed his vehicle into a police car has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
The Roanoke Times reports ( http://bit.ly/Ub6PK3) 26-year-old Willie Ed Clark was committed to a state mental hospital following an appearance in Franklin County Circuit Court.
Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Robert Deatherage says mental evaluations found Clark could not comprehend the consequences of his actions that day.
Prosecutors say Clark left a gas station without paying on June 25 in a Jeep stolen from a car dealership. When spotted by police, he sped off, ramming into a patrol car when he reached the end of a residential road. Officers opened fire on the Jeep and arrested Clark.
Neither Clark nor the officers were injured.
