D.C.-area schools add police following Conn. rampage

Monday - 12/17/2012, 3:05pm  ET

FALLS CHURCH, Va. - Schools in the Washington area had a beefed up police presence following Friday's school shooting in Connecticut.

In Fairfax County, additional school resource officers were deployed Monday, though at some schools students were largely oblivious to increased security.

At Westgate Elementary near Falls Church, parent Kathy Timmons thought the additional security was a good idea. While she's happy that the school practices lockdowns and takes security seriously, she says she's concerned that intruders could still gain entrance, especially in the trailers occupied by students outside the main building.

Teachers told sixth-graders at the school Monday that the trailer doors would be locked from now on in response to the tragedy.

Fairfax County is the largest school system in the region with 181,000 students. Other local school districts also increased patrols.
