Smithsburg to operate speed cameras near schools

Monday - 12/17/2012, 8:56am  ET

SMITHSBURG, Md. - Smithsburg police say a speed camera that will operate around the town's three public schools could be operational by next month.

Police Chief George Knight tells The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown ( http://tinyurl.com/c5qo4sx) that there is rampant speeding near the three schools on North Main Street. Smithsburg Council member Donnie Souders says more than 1,200 vehicles drive past the schools every day, and more than half are speeding.

Souders says once the cameras start operating, motorists will have a 30-day grace period before they start getting ticketed.

Similar cameras were recently installed in Hagerstown. They will be operated by a company called Optotraffic, which will get a share of the revenue from the fines.
