WASHINGTON - Police in Washington say officers are handing out cards with safety tips at transit stops to help prevent robberies that have become more common in recent weeks.
The tips offer advice on how to reduce the risk of becoming a robbery victim. The cards are being handed out this week in the police district that includes Capitol Hill and much of the district's downtown. Police say the effort began after an analysis of robbery patterns.
The department says that in many robberies cash and devices such as smartphones were taken from pedestrians.
The Washington Post reports ( http://wapo.st/VzaSPV) that the district's commander said in a community email that the primary concern is for those walking home from public transit in the evening.
