WASHINGTON - A big Thanksgiving tradition for many is spending the day preparing a big feast. For others, it's just eating that feast.
If you don't want to spend Thanksgiving Day cooking, you have options.
Nycci Nellis, editor of The List Are You On It, offers these suggestions.
If you are looking for a place to buy prepared food or get those special ingredients, Nellis recommends a trip Thanksgiving day to the Pike Central Farm Market on Rockville Pike.
"There will be over 22 vendors there, with specific Thanksgiving fare," says Nellis. "This is an excellent place to get what you want, and I would not miss it."
It will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m on Thanksgiving. It's located at 11806 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Md.
People might think that most restaurants are closed for Thanksgiving, but a lot are open.
"For those of you that would like a little French twist with your Thanksgiving, I would absolutely check out the Little Bastille over in Alexandria," says Nellis.
She says that Chef Christophe Poteaux and his wife Michelle will cook up a lovely meal for Thanksgiving. They have special offerings that day, and everything is sourced locally with lovely ingredients and a beautiful atmosphere.
"If you are looking for something fancy, I would recommend people to head over to Adour in the St. Regis," says Nellis. She adds that they are doing a three-course menu, and the restaurant has a very luxurious setting.
If you want to go Italian, Nellis recommends in Penn Quarter. They will be offering a special Thanksgiving menu (PDF), which includes traditional Thanksgiving fare like stuffing and cranberry sauce.
At Hill Country Barbecue you can pick up and bring home a full Thanksgiving feast, and you don't have to tell anybody.
"This I definitely worth checking out," says Nellis.
It's too late to order out from Hill Country, but they'll be open Thanksgiving day.
At Black Salt Fish Market you can get everything you want for your Thanksgiving dinner, including the pies. But you have to get your order in Sunday, Nov. 18. On Tuesday, you will be able to get in the doors at Pearl Dive Oyster Palace to buy pies to go.
"So if you are looking to bring home something a little different for the holidays, that is a great dessert," says Nellis.
