Executive director leaving D.C. lobbying group

WASHINGTON - The longtime executive director of a nonprofit that lobbies for the District of Columbia is leaving the organization.

Friday is Ilir Zherka's last day as the leader of D.C. Vote, which advocates for representation in Congress for the district and expansion of home rule.

Zherka spent 10 years with D.C. Vote, a period that was marked by more frustrations than successes. A bill that would have given the district a voting member of the House died in 2009.

But Zherka says he's optimistic about a proposed charter amendment that would give the district the freedom to spend its local tax dollars without Congressional approval. If it passes, Congress would have to intervene to stop it.

Zherka is joining the National Conference on Citizenship as executive director.
