Howard U. students worried about crime spike

Saturday - 10/20/2012, 1:50pm  ET

WASHINGTON - Some Howard University students say they are worried about safety near the Washington campus after a recent spike in armed robberies, thefts and assaults.

University Police Chief Leroy James tells The Washington Post ( there has been a small spike in crimes since September. He says the incidents have been more violent than typical snatch-and-grab thefts.

One student in an off-campus residence hall was robbed by two gunmen who broke into his room. In another case, a student's car was stolen after men forced her out of the vehicle. Other students have been attacked nearby.

Some students say they'll wait for buses to campus, rather than walk even three blocks.

James attributes the rise in crime to this weekend's homecoming festivities because it draws many visitors, and criminals are watching.
