RICHMOND, Va. - A Civil War attraction in Richmond ha reached its $8 million fundraising goal ahead of schedule.
Christy Coleman, president of the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar, made the announcement Friday. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch ( http://bit.ly/RMQYA0), reaching the goal will allow groundbreaking for a new building to begin within a year.
The building will contain a 100-seat "experience theater" telling the story of Richmond on fire in the last days of the Civil War. Evacuating Confederates torched several warehouses to keep supplies out of Union hands, and the fire spread out of control into the city's industrial and commercial district.
Money from the campaign also helped to finance a visitor orientation center.
