COVINGTON, Va. - One of the oldest covered bridges in Virginia is among more than two dozen additions to the nation's historic landmarks.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced the selection Wednesday of the Humpback Bridge in Alleghany County. Built in 1857, the bridge is described by interior officials as the best surviving example of a timber multiple-kingpost truss. The design was used for some of the earliest covered bridges in America.
The southwest Virginia bridge joins more than 2,500 national historic landmarks.
