Office of Chief Financial Officer abruptly resigns

WASHINGTON (AP) - The head of internal affairs for the District of Columbia's Office of the Chief Financial Officer has abruptly resigned, saying he doesn't like the direction the agency is taking.

The Washington Post reports William J. DiVello, who had headed the Office of Integrity and Oversight since 2010, resigned Thursday. The move comes less than a week before DiVello was expected to testify before the D.C. Council about problems in the city's tax office.

Chief Financial Officer Natwar M. Gandhi did not return a request for comment from the newspaper.

DiVello's office completed an audit this year that was critical of the city's assessment procedures. The audit was made public after The Washington Post obtained a copy and wrote about its findings in August.
