VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A swordfish caught by a Virginia Beach man has been certified as a state record for the species.
Joseph Harris caught the 446-pound swordfish Sept. 1 during an overnight trip to the Norfolk Canyon on the 34-foot charter boat Just Right, according to the Virginia Marine Resource Commission.
The previous record was a 381.5-pound swordfish caught by James Alexander of Virginia Beach more than 30 years ago.
After catching and releasing a 10-foot long tiger shark and a 46-inch swordfish, the crew hooked the huge swordfish. It took Harris nearly three hours to land the fish.
