HAMPTON, Va. - A company hired to come up with development plans for property at Fort Monroe has unveiled several options.
Sasaki Associates presented five options at a public forum Thursday night. Media outlets report the options include a combination of residential, retail and restaurant areas.
The plans also include a trail around the peninsula's perimeter. The company wants to renovate present buildings rather than tear them down.
The Fort Monroe Authority board of directors and the governor must approve the master plan before it is implemented.
The military deactivated the post last year and a national monument was created on portions of the property.
Fort Monroe was the third-oldest U.S. Army post in continuous active service until it closed.
