NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A Newport News detective is facing charges that he displayed a handgun during a road rage incident.
Newport News police say 58-year-old Detective Michael Poole faces two misdemeanor counts of brandishing a firearm after the victim and a passenger took out criminal summonses against him on Monday.
Poole was placed on administrative suspension with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation and criminal proceedings.
Poole is a 27-year department veteran assigned to the intelligence unit.
A Newport News man reported that on Sept. 6 another driver "laid on the horn," made hand gestures and followed him into a parking lot, where he approached the caller's vehicle, exchanged words and then showed his gun. The man then drove away, but the caller followed him. Police determined the vehicle was Poole's.
