The incident happened at 7:28 a.m. as a group of three students drove to school.

Their Toyota Camry was traveling westbound on Route 644 when it ran off the road. The 17-year-old driver overcorrected and lost control of the car, Virginia State Police say.

The 16-year-old front seat passenger, Ian T. Heflin, died at the scene. His sister, Brianna E. Heflin, 14, was flown to a local hospital.

The driver was not injured.

Officials say all three were wearing seat belts. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
