ROANOKE, Va. - Union officials plan to seek a federal mediator after Valley Metro bus drivers rejected the city of Roanoke's latest contract offer.

Drivers also authorized a strike during Sunday's vote. But Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1493 president Roger Brice tells WSLS-TV ( that he believes the two sides can reach an agreement.

Drivers have been working under the old contract's terms since it expired in September 2011. Issues include pay raises, health insurance contributions and leave of absence terms.

Valley Metro general manager Carl Palmer says the company will continue negotiating in good faith with the union.
