FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Officials and residents trying to determine what's contaminating a King George County beach have zeroed in on a drain pipe extending from a trailer park to about 400 feet from a waterfront restaurant.
The Free Lance-Star of Fredericksburg reports (( http://bit.ly/PuPQC0) that the cause of high bacteria levels at Fairview Beach has been a mystery since 2004, when officials began regularly taking samples from the Potomac River and advising people not to swim. Some residents have joined the inquiry and have taken 179 water samples.
Twenty officials and residents met Thursday and agreed the drain pipe deserves closer scrutiny. James Beckley of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality suggested taking water samples from both ends to determine whether there could be an illegal sewage connection or leakage from a drain field.
