LYNCHBURG, Va. - Lynchburg officials say a severe windstorm in June cost the city more than $5 million for response and cleanup.

The estimated cost includes $3.5 million to pay for collection and disposal of brush. About 35,000 tons of brush were collected by late August.

The News and Advance ( http://bit.ly/NodscZ) says a report on the storm's costs was given to City Council on Tuesday. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will pay 75 percent of communities' eligible storm-related costs.

City officials also are recommending improvements for future storm response operations. The recommendations include buying more generators for critical city facilities and developing a more extensive public communication system.
