WASHINGTON – Power is almost restored after thousands in the region woke up Sunday to no electricity following Saturday’s storm.
As of 11:50 p.m. Sunday, Pepco reports approximately 23 customers are still out.
Pepco initially said most would be restored by midnight, but some would take longer.
BGE customers were restored by 11:30 p.m., in accordance with BGE spokesman Rob Gould’s early prediction.
Just before midnight, Dominion had about 129 outages lingering in Northern Virginia, down from 115,000 Saturday.
“We do have some locations where wires are down,” said Dominion spokeswoman LeHa Anderson early Sunday.
The storms Saturday afternoon brought winds near 70 mph and knocked out electricity to as many as 192,000 homes and businesses served by the three utilities.
A tree crashed into the upper bedrooms of a home in the 9400 block of Lapstrake Lane, Burke, Va. Four children and one dog were located in the bedrooms at the time.
The family was able to get everyone out. No one was harmed.
Prince George’s County Fire and EMS reported that twelve people sustained non-life threatening injuries when patrons at the Prince George’s County Fair attempted to evacuate the Show Place Arena before the storms hit.
The roof blew off of a building under construction on H Street in Northeast D.C. Police say no one was hurt.
Water overflowed some storm drains, while rain pounded the windows of both cars and homes. Lots of small to medium-sized branches were came crashing down.
One Virginia fire department reported seeing a tornado-like funnel cloud south of Chantilly in Fairfax County, according to the National Weather Service. A funnel cloud was also reported by law enforcement at Cape St. Claire in Anne Arundel County. The service hasn’t confirmed them yet.
