Smith Mountain Lake 2.7 feet below normal level

DANVILLE, Va. - Appalachian Power estimates that Smith Mountain Lake's water level is 2.7 feet below normal.

Appalachian Power spokesman Todd Burns says lack of rainfall has reduced the lake's level.

Burns tells WSLS-TV ( coming into the lake is averaging 200 to 250 cubic feet per second.

Under federal law, Appalachian Power had to release 600 cubic feet of water per second until Sept. 1. On Sept. 1, the required water release fell to 500 cubic feet per second.

The lake's water level concerns boaters. Don Clement says he and some other boaters wouldn't be able to get their boats in the water if the level falls another 6 to 8 inches.
