Millions in Wintergreen Resort upgrades planned

Wednesday - 9/5/2012, 1:08pm  ET

WINTERGREEN, Va. - Wintergreen Resort says the company that bought the central Virginia facility will spend nearly $12 million to make improvements over the next 16 months.

The resort announced the investments by the James C. Justice Companies on Wednesday. Members in June approved the $16.5 million sale of the resort to Jim Justice, owner of The Greenbrier in West Virginia.

Officials say the investments will help to open more terrain earlier and deliver more consistent snow conditions throughout the ski season. Other improvements will include upgrading aquatics and fitness facilities, as well as renovations to a mountaintop clubhouse restaurant.

Wintergreen encountered financial problems earlier this year because of a mild winter, the loss of its $3 million line of credit with Bank of America and a now- settled tax-credit dispute with the state.
