Landslide victory for Krupicka for NoVa special election

WASHINGTON – Alexandria City Councilman and Democrat Rob Krupicka overwhelmingly defeated Republican challenger Timothy McGhee to win Northern Virginia’s 45th House of Delegates special election Tuesday night.

Krupicka won with 75 percent of the vote in a district that includes parts of Fairfax and Arlington counties and the City of Alexandria.

For McGhee, it’s his second loss in as many years. Last November, he lost a race to Democrat Adam Ebbin for a state Senate seat in the 30th District.

Krupicka replaces Delegate David L. Englin who resigned after an extramarital affair became public.

Gov. Bob McDonnell chose Sept. 4 for the election because another special election took place on the same day. In the Norfolk area, Democrat Kenneth Alexander ran unopposed for the seat Sen. Yvonne Miller held for 24 years before her death.

Miller, 77, died in July, a day shy of her 78th birthday. She was the first black woman elected to Virginia’s House of Delegates in 1984 and the first black woman elected to the state Senate in 1988.

About 8,500 of 62,777 registered voters turned out to vote, which is about 13 percent — much higher than expected. Before the election it was predicted there would be a record-low turnout with single digit percentages.
