DOVER, Del. - Nick Elko scored two touchdowns to lead Delaware State past Virginia Military Institute 17-10 Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
Elko's 26-yard touchdown pass to Travis Tarpley with 42 seconds left in the second quarter gave Delaware State a 10-0 lead at halftime.
VMI cut the lead to 10-7 late in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by David Turner.
The Keydets tied the game at 10 with 2:35 seconds left behind Jeff Sexton's 22-yard fieldgoal.
With 45 seconds remaining in the game, Elko ended a nine-play, 55-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run giving the Hornets the lead for good.
Turner led VMI with 101 yards rushing on 23 carries. But VMI could not overcome four turnovers -- three fumbles and an interception.
Delaware State defeated VMI 24-21 last season in the teams' first meeting.
