WASHINGTON - The Maryland Terrapins are taking names on the gridiron this year. Literally.
A preview of the 2012 uniform reveals the team has opted to include player names on the back of the new jerseys. The overall look is a much cleaner design with just one helmet — without last year's complicated turtle-shell pattern — and pants and jerseys in either solid red or white.
WTOP's Dave Preston says this signifies a back-to-basics approach, following last year's uniforms that included two helmets, four jersey colors and four different pants. Many thought the more complex and intricate designs were jarring.
Fans hope this new design will change the team's luck. The Terps finished with a 1-7 record in the ACC last year, and 2-10 overall.
Under Armour, whose founder graduated from the University of Maryland, remains the team's supplier.
