Thursday - 1/31/2013, 11:06am  ET

ROANOKE, Va. - The owners of a defunct tax preparation business in Roanoke have been sentenced for filing false returns to illegally collect about $120,000 in refunds.

Federal prosecutors say William and Michelle Ferguson fabricated information from clients who sought help in filing tax returns. They used the false information to overstate clients' income, and then gave clients a fraction of the refunds' total amounts.

The Roanoke Times ( http://bit.ly/Vua55H) reports that Michelle Ferguson was sentenced to two years and five months Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Roanoke. William Ferguson was sentenced to a year and two months in prison.

The couple pleaded guilty in 2012 to conspiracy to commit fraud. Michelle Ferguson also pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft.
