Proposals sought for Va. Women's Monument

Wednesday - 7/18/2012, 3:40am  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Women's Monument Commission is seeking proposals for a sculpture to be installed on the grounds of Capitol Square in Richmond.

The commission was established by the Virginia General Assembly in 2010 to find an appropriate monument to commemorate the contributions of the women of Virginia.

Gov. Bob McDonnell's office says the monument will represent the vital roles that women have played in Virginia history. The commission also hopes it will help educate and inspire future generations of Virginians. In October, nine community discussions on the monument were held across the state.

Details on the criteria, timeline and application process are available on the commission's website at womensmonumentcom.virginia.gov. Proposals must be submitted no later than Oct. 1. The final selection will be announced during Women's History Month in March.
