Tim Bracken,

WASHINGTON - Every year, the Fourth of July fireworks display brings thousands of visitors to the National Mall, but many of us locals prefer to celebrate away from the huge crowds and hubbub that go along with the festivities.

One good option would be to check out your favorite music venue, but many clubs close for the holiday. Below is a list of notable happenings that could augment your festive mood without upping the claustrophobia factor:

July 3

Don't want to go out on July 4? Here are some concerts scheduled for July 3 that will get you cheering:

  • Legendary songwriter Chris Isaak takes the stage at the Birchmere in Alexandria. The Birchmere features table seating and a varied dinner menu, so you won't have to worry about dinner before the show.

  • For music lovers with more adventurous leanings, rock/dance phenomenon Scissor Sisters will be performing at the 9:30 Club. This is a second show that was added due to demand, and tickets are still available.

  • IOTA Club and Café in Arlington is hosting a "4th of July Eve" show from local rockabilly band Jumpin' Jupiter. If you like authentic retro-rock, this band is a must-see.

July 4

  • DC9 nightclub will open at noon for their second annual "Grillin with DC Brau" rooftop party. DC Brau is a local brewery, one of their employees, DJ Brandon Skall, will be spinning records. Two chefs will be on grill duty, so arrive hungry. The rooftop event will have a clear view of the fireworks, and there is no cover charge.

  • Head up to the Rock & Roll Hotel rooftop deck and bar for a nice view of the fireworks, $6 pitchers of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and a hot dog eating contest. The contest begins at 4 p.m., and the person with the highest dog-count will receive access to 3 months of concerts at the venue. Runners up will receive $100 and $50 bar tab credits, respectively.

  • The Black Cat nightclub will be open for the 4th. There won't be any live music, but their Red Room bar will be open at 8 p.m.
