D.C. Council punts on campaign finance reform

WASHINGTON (AP) - The D.C. Council will end the year without making any changes to the district's much-criticized campaign finance laws.
Councilmember Mary Cheh had proposed an emergency ban on money-order contributions greater than $25. But she pulled the bill from consideration Tuesday after Councilmember Tommy Wells said he would offer wider-reaching amendments that other councilmembers had no interest in voting on.
Mayor Vincent Gray had proposed a broad package of campaign finance reforms. Some of the mayor's proposals would address the questions that have dogged his own 2010 campaign, which is the subject of a federal investigation. But the council has put off consideration of those measures.
Cheh had hoped to ban large money orders because she says fraudulent money orders have played a role in recent campaign scandals.
