RICHMOND, Va. - A Chesterfield man will serve four days in jail for illegally registering to vote even though he was barred from doing so because he was a felon.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports ( http://bit.ly/MdZaIN) that 50-year-old Michael Anthony Harris was sentenced Friday in Chesterfield General District Court to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice. The charge was reduced from a felony.

Harris is one of 40 people statewide charged as part of a Virginia State Police investigation of voter registration irregularities from the 2008 general election

Harris was convicted 20 years ago of cocaine possession. He is barred from voting unless having his rights restored by the governor.

His attorney told the court Harris registered after being encouraged to by a group soliciting new voters outside a grocery store.
