VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A green turtle that spent the winter months at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is ready to be returned to sea.
The turtle will be released Thursday from First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach.
The city of Virginia Beach says in a news release that two Sandbridge residents who found her nicknamed the turtle "Makahiki," a Hawaiian term that means "New Year."
The turtle arrived on New Year's Day and gained 2 pounds during its six-month stay at the Marine Animal Care Center. The turtle is being fitted with a satellite transmitter so she can be tracked.
