BEDFORD, Va. (AP) - A pair of nesting osprey at Smith Mountain Lake has become Internet stars.
Nesting on the Bedford County side of the lake, the birds of prey have attracted more than 100,000 hits online since a camera began focusing on their nest four months ago, and the numbers are growing.
The News & Advance of Lynchburg reports that the camera is aimed downward at the circular nest. The nature show has attracted viewers from afar, including viewers in the Canadian maritime province of Nova Scotia, where the osprey is the provincial bird.
A nesting pair of eagles in Richmond that were the focus of a similar remote cam stirred huge interest when they produced two eaglets.
