WASHINGTON - Former D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown will spend no time in jail on a misdemeanor campaign finance violation if he continues to stay out of trouble.

Superior Court Judge Juliet McKenna sentenced him Tuesday afternoon to 30 days in jail but suspended the sentence, meaning he will stay out of jail if he complies with the terms of probation.

Earlier in the day, Brown was sentenced in federal court to one day in custody and six months of home detention for lying on loan applications. He will also spend two years on supervised release and be required to do 480 hours of community service.

Brown admitted to both crimes in June. He gave up his role on the council as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.
