Error exposes about 300 U.Va. students' transcripts online

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A University of Virginia spokeswoman says human error likely caused about 300 students' transcripts to become accessible online.

Carol Wood tells The Daily Progress ( http://bit.ly/NGni70) that some transcripts contained students' Social Security numbers.

She says there's no indication anyone tried to exploit the data. But the university will offer free credit screening to the affected students.

Wood says the problem appears to have affected 300 to 350 students who applied to the university's Summer Language institute.

University employees learned about the problem Tuesday morning after a student found his transcript online while conducting a Google search for an image of himself.

U.Va. assistant vice president Shirley C. Payne says university officials are trying to determine how long the information was accessible online.
