Virginia US House primaries on June 12

RICHMOND, Va. - U.S. House primaries on the June 12 ballot:

DEMOCRATIC PRIMARIES

4th District:

Ella P. Ward vs. Joe T. Elliott.

_ Ward is a Chesapeake city councilwoman and former appointee to the State Board of Education by Democratic Govs. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine. Elliott is a minister and small business owner making his first run for office.

8th District:

Rep. James P. Moran vs. Bruce B. Shuttleworth.

_ Moran is seeking his 12th term in the House representing Arlington and his home, Alexandria. Shuttleworth is a former Navy fighter pilot.

REPUBLICAN PRIMARIES

4th District:

Rep. J. Randy Forbes vs. Roberta "Bonnie" Girard.

_ Forbes, of Chesapeake, is a former state GOP chairman and has won six terms. Girard, of Petersburg, has lived in China and contends that Forbes is naive in his outlook toward the lone Communist superpower and major U.S. creditor.

6th District:

Rep. Robert Goodlatte vs. Karen U. Kwiatkowski.

_ Goodlatte has served 10 terms in Congress. Kwiatkowski is a retired Air Force colonel from Harrisonburg.

7th District:

Rep. Eric Cantor vs. Floyd C. Bayne.

_ Cantor, as the House majority leader, is the second most powerful Republican in Congress and has served six terms. Bayne ran against Cantor in the heavily GOP-leaning 7th District in 2012 on the Independent Green ticket and got less than 7 percent of the vote.

11th District:

Chris S. Perkins vs. Ken L. Vaughn.

_ Perkins is a retired Army colonel and former Green Beret. Vaughn is a traffic engineer and Christian conservative.
