VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Beach's park system is rated seventh among the nation's 40th largest cities by a national conservation group.
The nonprofit Trust for Public Land gave Virginia Beach's system four "park benches" on its recent ParkScoreTM rating system.
City park systems are rated on a scale of zero to five "park benches," based on accessibility, size, and services and investment.
Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation director Michael Kalvort said Thursday in a news release that the city's ranking shows the system is balanced in providing access to residents.
Kalvort says the city has doubled its parkland since it adopted the Open Space Plan in 2001.
