Police crack down on nighttime seatbelt scofflaws

Thursday - 5/24/2012, 3:00am  ET

BALTIMORE (AP) - Police in the Baltimore area are cracking down on people who aren't wearing their seatbelts at night.

As part of the "Click-It or Ticket" campaign, state troopers and Baltimore city and county police officers will be conducting high-visibility enforcement Thursday night.

Maryland law requires drivers and front seat passengers and everyone under the age of 16 must wear seatbelts.

Authorities say more than half of the people who died in nighttime crashes in Maryland from 2007 to 2011 were not wearing their seatbelts. During that same period, a third of people who died in daytime crashes were not belted in.
