Arlington cemetery hosts taps-playing buglers

WASHINGTON - More than 200 buglers and trumpeters gathered at Arlington National Cemetery to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the composing of taps.

The Washington Post ( reports that the group sounded the melancholy melody three times Saturday. They played twice all together at the cemetery's amphitheater and once from various stations across the grounds.

Taps was created in 1862 at Harrison's Landing, Va. by an officer in the Union army. It has been played as an unofficial part of military funerals since the end of the Civil War.
